The Talmud teaches that the style of lettering the scribe must use is called K’tav Ashurit or Assyrian script. There are three basic styles of this script: Beyt Yoseph – which is generally used by the Ashkenazi or Eastern European community, Beyt Ari – used by Chassidic Jews, and Veilish – a style used by the Sephardi community.
